چکیده

This paper presents a fine-scale (30 meter resolution) regional land cover modeling system, based on the SLEUTH cellular automata model, that was developed for a 257000 km area comprising the Chesapeake Bay drainage basin in the eastern United States. As part of this effort, we developed a new version of the SLEUTH model (SLEUTH-3r), which introduces new functionality and fit metrics that substantially increase the performance and applicability of the model. In addition, we developed methods that expand the capability of SLEUTH to incorporate economic, cultural and policy information, opening up new avenues for the integration of SLEUTH with other land-change models. SLEUTH-3r is also more computationally efficient (by a factor of 5) and uses less memory (reduced 65%) than the original software. With the new version of SLEUTH, we were able to achieve high accuracies at both the aggregate level of 15 subregional modeling units and at finer scales. We present forecasts to 2030 of urban development under a current trends scenario across the entire Chesapeake Bay drainage basin, and three alternative scenarios for a sub-region within the Chesapeake Bay watershed to illustrate the new ability of SLEUTH-3r to generate forecasts across a broad range of conditions. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The SLEUTH Land Use Change Model: A Review

Land use change is driven by interaction in space and time between humans and the environment that can be captured by computer simulation models (Veldkamp and Verburg, 2004). In the last few decades, land use change models have played an important role in understanding the causes, mechanisms and consequences of land use dynamics. SLEUTH is an open source cellular automata based land use change ...

Urban Growth Modeling using Integrated Cellular Automata and Gravitational Search Algorithm (Case Study: Shiraz City, Iran)

Cities are growing and encountering many changes over time due to population growth and migration. Identification and detection of these changes play important roles in urban management and sustainable development. Urban growth models are divided into two main categories: first cellular models which are further divided into experimental, dynamic, and integrated models and second vector models. ...

A Decade of Cellular Urban Modeling with SLEUTH: Unresolved Issues and Problems

SLEUTH is a mature cellular automaton urban model, now applied to over 100 different cities and regions. In this paper, the model’s context and history is introduced, the applications reviewed and some model improvements and sensitivity tests summarized. A section discusses how the model works and then the model’s limitations and assumptions are critically examined with the intent of revealing ...

Performance Evaluation of the SLEUTH Model in the Shenyang Metropolitan Area of Northeastern China

Performance evaluation is crucial for the development and improvement of an urban cellular automata model, such as SLEUTH. In this paper, we employed multiple methods for map comparison andmodel validation to evaluate the simulation performance of the SLEUTH urban growth model in the Shenyang metropolitan area of China. These multiple methods included the relative operating characteristic (ROC)...
